Arceo Press invited 24 artists of Mexican descent to interpret this event.
These are the 24 perspectives brought about by these printmakers living and working

ARTISTS’ BIOS
|
Guadalupe Anaya (b. Ciudad de México 1949) Egresada de la Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes de la
Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo en 1994, fecha a partir de la cual se dedica a la
producció de obra dentro de las artes visuales, en las manifestaciones de pintura, escultura y
gráfica. A la fecha cuenta con ocho exposiciones individuales y más de cuarenta colectivas
en México, Centroamérica y Estados Unidos. Ha participado en concursos y bienales nacionales,
obteniendo premios y menciones. Su obra forma parte del acervo de la Universidad Michoacana, de la
Asociación de Promotores Culturales de Michoacán, de la FEDECMI, del Consulado de México
en Illinois E.U., del H. Ayuntamiento de la ciudad de Pátzcuaro, de la SECUM, de la Universidad De Paul,
Ill., entre otras.
René Hugo Arceo (b. 1959 Cojumatlan, Mexico) is a printmaker & painter who graduated from the
Art Institute of Chicago in 1985. In 1990 he co-founded the printmakers’ collective Taller Mexicano de
Grabado. He has exhibited in Poland, Mexico, Spain, Canada, Nicaragua, France and the USA. René has
received numerous awards including two Governor’s International Exchange Program from the Illinois Arts
Council to travel, lecture and exhibit in Lublin, Poland (2002) and in Paris, France (2006). He created this
print portfolio through Arceo Press, as a way of bringing artists together to collaborate at the international
arena. René is a current member of Expressions Graphics of Oak Park, Illinois and the Federacion de
Clubes Michoacanos en Illinois. He teaches fulltime at Monroe Elementary School.

Mizraim Cárdenas (b. 1971 Morelia, Mexico) studied drawing, painting and printmaking with master
artist Alfredo Zalce from 1987-1997. From 1990-1993 he studied integral design at the CEID in Morelia, Mexico.
In 2004 he participates in the printmaking workshop in Bilbao, Spain, sponsored by the Bilbaoarte Foundation.
In 2007 he participates in the workshop "multiple international transparencies", taught by Alicia
Candian at House of the Américas, Havana, Cuba. From 1987-2007 he participates in more than 50 group
exhibitions including Presencia Nacional de Creadores in 1999 at the Centro Nacional de las Artes, México
City, Bajo un mismo cielo in Chicago, Illinois, and Graphic reality: Mexican printmaking today in New York City in 2006.
Tomas Castro Bringas, Nacido en Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, México, en el año de 1961. En
el seno de una familia de profesionistas de la educación, quienes se trasladan a la ciudad de Victoria de
Durango. Dgo donde Tomas Bringas realiza sus estudios preparatorios. Posteriormente realiza estudios profesionales
en la "Real Academia de San Carlos" de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México de donde
egresa como licenciado en Artes Visuales. Desempeñándose como Publicista y diseñador, funda
varios talleres gráficos simultáneamente en Mé en EE.UU. Ha recibido numerosas becas
y reconocimientos a lo largo de de 30 años a favor de la promoción y difusión de la
cultura mexicana en el extranjero. Actualmente se desempeña como catedrático de fotografía
y medios electrónicos audiovisuales en la Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango, México.
Sam Z. Coronado first approached printmaking as a young artist with a background in painting. I was
exploring my creative potential by experimenting with various media. Screen printing facilitated my artistic
expression, as it allows me to better incorporate graphic imagery that compliments my inherent style. Serigraphy
offers many artistic possibilities, as it can be used on various substrates and in combination with other media.
I have been dedicated to the serigraph printmaking technique for over twenty years, and my latest work is
a combination of digital art and screen printing.
Nicolás De Jes&udacute;s (b. 1960 Amelyatepec, Mexico) a Nahua Indian, whose hometown is well known
for the traditional painters of amate paper. Nicolas is by experience self taught and an artist by heritage.
In 1981 he traveled to Mexico City to learn printmaking at Artegrafias Limitas printshop. In 1988 he visited Los
Angeles, CA, and later he moved to Chicago where he settled for almost a decade. He promoted his art through the
Mexican Museum from that city and became a co-founder of the Taller Mexicano de Grabado in 1990. Nicolas has
exhibited in France, Japan & Indonesia through the support of the L’Association pour l’Estampe
et l’Art populaire. He promotes printmaking, his colleagues artwork and their ancestral culture.
Celeste De Luna is visual artist/teacher from lower South Texas. She has exhibited her work in various
cities in the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, San Diego, and Chicago. She is currently working on a body of work
titled “Compass” and in November 2010 will be part of a group show titled “Sacrilege: the
Desecration, Destruction, and Deconstruction of the Chicano Icon” at Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego,
CA. De Luna teaches art for Brownsville ISD, continues her studio practice, and community organizing work. You can

Amy Díaz-Infante (b. Salinas, CA) received her BA in Art with a concentration in Printmaking from
Yale University in 2003 and her MFA, with honors, from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2009. While at RISD
she co-designed a printmaking course incorporating installation and performance - Prinstaformance. She has been
an Artist-in-Residence at Kala in Berkeley, CA and at Djerassi in Woodside, CA. She is co-founder and 1/3 of Tres
Hermanas, which was recently awarded a residency at the Luggage Store/Tenderloin National Forest in San Francisco.
She lives in Oakland, CA.
Héctor Duarte (b. 1952 Caurio, Mexico). He studied mural painting at the workshop of David Alfaro
Siqueiros in 1977. Since moving to Chicago in 1985, Duarte has participated in the creation of more than 50 murals.
He has exhibited his paintings and prints in solo and collective shows at such venues as the NMMA, the School of
the Art Institute, the State of Illinois Gallery and Casa Estudio Museo Diego Rivera in Mexico. Duarte’s
awards include a 2008 Artist Fellowship Award from the IAC, 2005 and 2007 Artistic Production Awards from
the Secretary of Culture of the state of Michoacán, a 1995 Chicago Bar Association Award for best work of
public art and a 1994 NEA project grant. In 2006 he participated in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the
National Mall in Washington, D.C., as an invited muralist. Duarte is the co-founder of the Julio Ruelas Print
Workshop in Zacatecas, La Casa de la Cultura in Zamora, Mexico, and the Mexican Printmaking Workshop in Chicago.
Roberto Ferreyra (b. 1957 Morelia, Mexico). Graduated from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and
Printmaking "La Esmeralda&" Mexico City. Roberto’s works have been shown in Spain, Canada
(Montreal & Toronto), Cuba and United States (New York & Chicago) as well as in his own country. His works
have also appeared in many art magazines from Mexico and other countries. In the last 3 years he and his wife,
artist Montserrat Alsina, started an exchange program with printmaking artists in Mexico City, Tlaxcala, Michoacan
and Puebla including residencies at each of those places and bringing their art to Chicago as well doing print
series with Taller Punta Seca in Mexico D.F.
Juan R. Fuentes (b. 1950 Artesia, New Mexico). As a cultural activist/artist/printmaker, I have
dedicated my work to supporting and being part of a global movement for social change. My works have addressed
issues that relate to local communities of color, social justice, peace, and international struggles for
liberation. My works reside in various private collections, and museums and I have exhibited both locally and
internationally. My early poster art is now part of the historic Chicano Poster Movement. Currently I’m a
visiting artist at the San Francisco Art Institute where I teach relief printmaking.
Sal García (b. Pharr, Texas) is a fine artist, illustrator and graphic designer. From a very young age Sal
became interested in drawing, painting and comic book art. He entered the commercial art curriculum at Lane
Technical High School in Chicago and won awards for his work. He graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art,
where he studied and cultivated his art in various artistic disciplines with the intention of becoming accomplished
in Commercial and Fine Art. He won awards for Packaging Design and Advertising Illustration. He participated in
various group shows and contributed his art to numerous silent auctions. Sal is currently a Graphic Designer,
a Design Consultant and a Fine Artist who practices in various mediums. His interests include past and present
popular culture, media, film, the art and mythologies of indigenous cultures, figurative art and Mexican
Iconography.
Mariana Garibay is an accomplished painter, printmaker and installation artist. Through her works she
transforms the threads that connect the real and the imaginary into magical environments that reference nature,
regeneration, science and the otherworldly. Her work has been exhibited through the Bay Area and Mexico. Most
recent exhibitions: Conceptual Landscapes, MACLA, San Jose, 2010 and Life Elsewhere, the Consulate General of
Mexico in San Francisco, 2009. Garibay has taught in the Bay Area through Kala Art Institute's Artists-in-Schools
program, SFMOMA, de Young Art Center, Mission Grafica and the Richmond Art Center. In 2005, she received an
emerging artist commission from the Alameda County Arts Commission. She is currently completing her degree in
painting and drawing at the California College of the Arts. She is a recipient of the CCA Faculty Honors Award
and the William & Gloria Brobeck Scholarship.
Salvador Jiménez Flores (b. Jalisco, México). Since coming to the United States in 2000,
Salvador has participated and contributed to the Chicago art scene. His work has been included in various solo
and group exhibitions: The National Museum of Mexican Art, The State Street Gallery, Aurora City Hall, Koehnline
Museum of Art, Beverly Art Center, and Casa de la Cultura, Jalisco, México. In addition, his public art
created with youth from the Pilsen, Lawdale, and La Villita communities such as "The Revival of the
Struggle" at the Rauner Family YMCA, "Alternative Remedy" at Saint Antony Hospital, and the
"Declaration of Immigration" at Yollocalli & Radio Arte building. Salvador’s work is in the
State Street Gallery collection (over 30 artworks) and other private collections. He is currently graphic designer
at CCDA and teaching artist at Yollocalli Art Reach.
Dolores Mercado (b. Jalisco, Mexico) studied art at the School of Visual Arts of the University of
Guadalajara, the National Institute of Fine Arts “La Esmeralda”, and at La Academia de San Carlos
in Mexico City. From 1999 to 2006 she was the host of two live talk art radio programs "Camino Tierra
Adentro&" and "Alquimia" at WRTE 90.5 FM. For the past twelve years she has worked for the National
Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago as Sr. Arts Education Coordinator, Associate Director of Education and currently
as the Associate Curator. She has exhibited in Mexico, Spain, the United States, Nicaragua and Canada.
Emmanuel C. Montoya (b. Corpus Christi, Texas) is a descendent of Lipan Apache and Mexican heritage.
He is an enrolled member of the Lipan Apache Band of Texas. Emmanuel has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for
46 years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking at San Francisco State
University. Emmanuel’s work has been strongly influenced by the Chicano Art movement of the 60’s &
70's and the master printmakers and muralists of contemporary Mexico, Latin America and the United States. He
believes that artists are integral members of their respective communities and that art must be made accessible
to all in society. It is his vision to carry forward this age-old technology of the relief print to meet the print
technologies of the 21st century.
Leopoldo Morales Praxedis (nace en 1953 en Apizaco, Tlax., Mexico); de 1974 a 1981 fue miembro activo del
Taller de Gráfica Popular. Como docente, adscrito a la Sección de ense&ngrave;anzas Artísticas
del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, desde 1989 es Becario Vitalicio como productor de obra artística del
INBA, produce su obra en el interior y exterior de M&eeacute;xico; la red de intercambio cultural - lograda por
iniciativa propia - se lo permite. COLECCIONES: Acervo del INBA, National Museum of Mexican Art de Chicago, Mexic
Arte Museum de Austin, Instituto Tlaxcalteca de Cultura, Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala. Y algunas
máximas casas de estudios en Estados Unidos, entre otros.
Oscar Moya (b. Mexico City) is an accomplished artist who has participated in group exhibitions in the USA
and in Mexico including the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, La Llorona Art Gallery, Casa de Cultura
Juchitán in Oaxaca, Mexico and El Museo Contemporaneo de Tijuana, in Baja California. Oscar migrated to the
USA at age 15 and labored as a migrant worker from San Antonio, Texas to settle in the West Town-Humboldt Park
Community in Chicago. He attended the School of Art Institute of Chicago and was actively involved in the Chicago
mural movement. Oscar was an arts activist at MARCH, Casa Aztlan, MIRA, Inc., El Taller Community Gallery and Casa
de Cultura Calles y Sue˜os in Chicago. He is currently a member of La Prensa/Southwest Printmakers in Las
Cruces, New Mexico. Moya resides in El Paso, Texas since 2005.
Francisco Plancarte Morales (nace en 1954 en Tlaxcala, Mexico). Estudio Artes Visuales en la Escuela
Nacional de Artes Pl&asticas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México donde actualmente es profesor.
Ha sido seleccionado en diversas ocasiones para integrar el Catálogo de Ilustradores en Publicaciones
Infantiles y Juveniles del Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, habiendo exhibido su trabajo
profesional en exposiciones y publicado en periódicos como "La Jornada" y la "Revista
de la Universidad". Obtuvo la beca de CONACULTA en Desarrollo Artístico Individual en Tlaxcala (2009)
y la beca de producción en proyecto por CONACULTA/ITC en 2010. Su obra se enfoca principalmente hacia el
grabado, el dibujo y la ilustraciín. Como artista plástico cuenta con más de 70 exposiciones
colectivas y tres individuales.
Joel Rendón Vázquez estudio en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado
"La Esmeralda." Cursa la maestría en la Academia de San Carlos, (UNAM) del 2006-2008. Colabora
a masificar las técnicas de la estampa y en 2001 realizó del Libro-Manual de Iniciación
al grabado para el niño poblano. Ha dado cursos de iniciación del grabado en Estados Unidos,
México y en Parma, Italia. Su obra gráfica se ha incluido en las revistas Escala, Matíz,
Playboy, Artes de México y Letras Libres además de las editoriales: Fondo de Cultura Económica,
CONACULTA, Universidad de Chapingo, UNAM y Alfaguara. Obtiene numerosos premios en la Habana, Guadalajara, Ciudad
de Mexico, Nueva York y Aguascalientes. Obtiene becas del FONCA en grafica y multimedia. Realiza residencias en
Chicago, E.U. y Alberta, Canada. Expone en África, Argentina, Cuba, Colombia, España, Estados
Unidos, Holanda, Puerto Rico, Colombia y México.
Ramiro Rodríguez was born in 1965 to Mexican emigrants and grew up in Western Michigan. In 1993 he
received his Master of Fine Art Degree in painting from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Rodriguez currently
lives in South Bend, Indiana with his wife and two sons. He is an Exhibition Coordinator at the Snite Museum of Art
at the University of Notre Dame. Rodríguez’s figurative paintings and prints have been exhibited in
various one-person and group shows around the country and are included in numerous private collections around the
world. However, he has encountered the widest public recognition through the reproduction of his works by the
multi-platinum selling musical group Tool. The group’s use of several of Ramiro’s images for
promotional material has introduced his work to many music fans around the world. An online huge portfolio of

Eva Solíz (b. 1965 Laredo, Texas) studied art at The University of Texas at Austin where she received
a BFA in studio art with an emphasis in painting, ceramics and intaglio printmaking. During the summer of 1989 she
attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, an artist residency program in Skowhegan, Maine. Chicago later
became her home where she attained an MFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has
been exhibited in Texas, Chicago and Mexico. Currently, she resides in her hometown of Laredo, Texas where she has
been employed by Laredo Community College as an art instructor for over 11 years and continues to create and exhibit
her art.
Israel Torres Moreno (Durango, Mexico) es asistente en las clases de fotografia y facilitador en las
clases de grabado en la Escuela de Pintura, Escultura y Artesanías de la UJED. Tiene 27 años de edad
y desde hace tres años es profesor de medios impresos en la carrera de Diseño
y Comunicaciín en la Universidad Autónoma España de Durango (UNES) y recientemente
ganador del concurso de video universitario "Independencia y Revolución Mexicana" (primér
lugar).
Gabriel Trinidad (b. 1981 Cuanacaxtitlán, México) showed interest in art since he was little,
but it was not until age 17 that he met painter Jaime Ignacio Lopez. Based on his experience at Mr. Lopez’
Studio, Gabriel becomes a full time artist. He enrolled in the Bachelors of Fine Arts program at the Centro
Universitario Simón Bolívar. He graduated in 2002, the same year he met artist Nicolas de Jesús,
with whom he is a cofounder of the Tixtlarte Printshop. Some exhibitions include: village hall at San Luis Acatlan
(2001), "Ñuu Savi" at the House of Culture in Acapulco (2002), "Una Lucha por la Madre
Tierra" in the town of Tixtla (2005), "Cielo Rojo" at IMCE in Chicago. He is currently an active
member of "Tlimoyotl" printshop. He is an assistant of printmaking and teaches children’s classes
in rural communities.

Tous les 3 ans, depuis 1989, pendant deux mois, s’ouvre à Chamalières et dans toute
la région un événement artistique exceptionnel dans le monde de la gravure: le Mondial de
l’Estampe et de la Gravure Originale, devenu très vite un événement artistique de
renommée internationale.
Pour ce 8ème Mondial, les gravures de Francisco de GOYA sont à l’honneur à
Chamalières. Lors de cette manifestation, constituée de la compétition et de nombreuses
expositions de prestige, vous pourrez aussi voir les œuvres de Léonor FINI, Jacques CALLOT,
PIRANÈSE, et de bien d’autres grééation contemporaine et accueille ainsi des centaines
d’artistes provenant du monde entier. Le catalogue des expositions est aujourd’hui
considéré, par les professionnels de l’estampe, comme une précieuse source
d’information.
Ainsi, c’est une myriade de petites fenêtres sur le monde que nous offrons aux yeux des
nombreux spectateurs. La portée internationale de cette manifestation permet «aux promeneurs du
regard», au nombre de 15000 lors de la dernière triennale, de rencontrer les différentes
sensibilités et moyens d’expression qui soulignent la diversité culturelle des exposants.
Nous vous invitons alors à voyager à travers les couleurs de l’Amérique du Sud,
réminiscences des premières civilisations des indiens d’Amérique, mais aussi la
modernité des techniques des Etats-Unis et de l’Europe de l’ouest à travers les
photogravures et photopolymères, l’extrême qualité graphique des pays de l’ancien
bloc de l’est, le symbolisme «naïf» des monotypes de l’Afrique, la calligraphie arabe
du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient, les splendeurs des couleurs de l’Asie, ou encore les véritables
«chants de signes» des aborigènes d’Australie. Il s’agit aussi d’une aventure
humaine à l’échelle planétaire. La Triennale, événement incontournable,
au cœur de l’Auvergne, bénéficie de la compétence de délégués
aux quatre coins du monde sans lesquels de nombreux artistes ne pourraient être découverts.
Comme à chaque édition, un jury composé de professionnels internationaux de la gravure
décernent plusieurs prix. Les visiteurs sont, cette année encore, mis à contribution en
décernant le Prix du Public à l’artiste qui les aura le plus touché.
De nombreuses animations sont organisées autour de la gravure. Vous pourrez assister à des
conférences mais aussi à des démonstrations animées par des artistes graveurs.
Le 8ème Mondial de l’Estampe et de la Gravure originale se tiendra du 9 octobre au 27 novembre
2010.

"This month we have a unique opportunity at Expressions Graphics.
We have a guest printmaker Rene Arceo, who is exhibiting Small Prints
in our gallery. He has exhibited widely in the Midwest, Mexico and Canada.
René also teaches in the Chicago public school system.
He's a wonderful teacher and is doing a benefit workshop
to help our not-for-profit printmaking gallery and studio".
Create prints using new and recycled Styrofoam (plates, containers).
There is no carving and no sharp tools involved.
It is easy for adults and children of any age.
Create your image on the Styrofoam using a regular pencil or ball-point pen.
Print by hand on regular typing paper using water based markers.
Very easy and lots of fun for the whole family.
