Lockport - René Arceo will lead a printmaking workshop for adults from 9 a.m. to noon April 14 1990 at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery, 200 E. 8th Street. Arceo, visual arts coordinator of Chicago's Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, also will give a slide talk on the history of Mexican fine art prints. Fee for the workshop is $5. Registration is required by April 10. The workshop will demonstrate linoleum block printing and allow participants to make their own small linoleum block prints. Wood block and its cousin, linoleum block prints, are traditional printmaking techniques of the past two centuries in Mexico. Arceo explained that with their strong contrasts and stark patterns, wood block prints have been used to convey dramatic scenes of the Mexican revolutionary struggles of this century and show the often cruel and hard life of Mexican peasants. Much of the art created by Mexico's indigenous peoples, such as the Mayas and Aztecs, was destroyed and suppressed by the conquistadors and throughout the Spanish colonial times. This beautiful and powerful art was rediscovered by revolutionary Mexican printmakers and mural painters in their efforts to express the new empowerment of post colonial Mexicans, Arceo said. Mexican art, though typically colorful und dramatic, has many innovative, abstract and unique styles, he said. Artists of Mexican heritage living in the United States, although their art styles vary greatly, look to both the Mexican Indian traditions as well as 20th century Mexican Revolutionary artists for inspiration, according to Arceo. |
